Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure yet? Here are the answers to some common questions
Strategic psychotherapy is a brief therapy which is solution-focused and outcome-based. It focuses on HOW you do what you do and not WHY. I won’t be delving into your past and seek “reasons” (ie tough childhood), I uncover and address the very pillars you have unconsciously developed that create and sustain the problem.
The integration of hypnotherapy accelerates the therapeutic outcomes, enabling quicker identification and restructuring of thought patterns and behaviours that don’t serve you. Clients experience relief more rapidly, as the hypnotic state enhances receptivity to change, streamlining the path to recovery.
This efficiency is especially beneficial for those seeking swift progress or those who feel stuck in traditional therapeutic models.
Most hypnosis focuses on guided visualisations to calm you down but while imagining blue ocean or enchanted forest may be pleasant and bring temporary relief, it doesn’t address the core pillars of the issue and doesn’t teach you new skills. Same with script reading, one size fits all hypnosis, which won’t take your individual factors into account.
Luckily, Strategic Hypnotherapy differs from other forms of hypnosis because it addresses the very pillars that create and sustain your problem. It also allows for the session to be personalised for you and thus that much more effective.
Traditional or authoritarian hypnosis tended to be scripted and telling you what to do. It may have also included hand levitation or other resistance building aspects.
I practise modern neo-Ericksonian form of hypnosis that doesn’t ask you to do anything. I offer you possibilities which are up to you to take on board or not. Because you have nothing to fight, there is no resistance and no concerns about not being able to be hypnotised.
So yes, everyone can be hypnotised, the depth of so called “trance” may differ between people but therapy results are not dependent on the depth of your trance.
Having said that, I will not proceed with the session if you are under influence of any substance that alters your perception (alcohol, drugs…).
Hypnosis somewhat is like a guided meditation, however with a purpose beyond relaxation and inner peace. Hypnosis induces a distinct brainwave pattern that is neither akin to normal waking, sleeping, or meditation. Instead, it shares similarities with the alpha state, characterised by physical and mental relaxation combined with mental clarity and heightened awareness of one’s surroundings.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a scientifically understood process and a very effective one in addressing a range of mental and emotional issues. It helps reprogramme your cognitive patterns so you can regain control of your mental and emotional state.
- Is Hypnosis safe? What if I don’t wake up?
Hypnosis is safe and actually a naturally occurring healthy state of mind. You have been in a similar state many times in your life before ie while driving and not remembering bits of the journey, while watching movies, just before falling asleep…
There are some myths around hypnosis – that it’s mind control, that you need to go deep into trance, from which you may not wake up… it’s none of these. You are conscious and aware of everything I am saying. I also cannot force imprint anything into your mind. You do not fall asleep, ergo you don’t need to wake up. In fact, if you happen to start falling asleep (simply from enjoying the relaxed state), I will bring you up a bit as you need to hear my voice ☺
No, not in a therapy setting. There is a misconception that the hypnotist holds control over the client’s actions and thoughts which stems from TV shows and other entertainment. In such scenario, the participants are carefully handpicked and are selected based on their willingness and confidence to participate and those that don’t mind looking a little ridiculous in front of an audience.
Hypnosis in a therapy setting is a guided form of relaxation that is a very pleasant and comforting state, which makes therapy that much more effective. Be assured that the client always remains in control. In fact, during hypnosis you can ignore hypnotherapist’s suggestions or even get up and leave the room.
The aim of clinical hypnotherapy is to help clients, not to dominate them. Please be reassured that you are in safe and very capable hands when you decide to work with me.
Everyone experiences it differently and there is no right or wrong way of experiencing hypnosis. When in trance-like state, as some people call it, people experience a state of mental, physical and emotional relaxation. This is a very healing state in itself. Dr Milton Erickson, a leading American Hypnotherapist, described the process of clinical hypnosis as “a free period in which individuality can flourish”.
During hypnosis, you may experience heightened awareness and deep relaxation, day-dreaminess (you are not asleep though) with sensation of heaviness in your body. You may be able to focus on every single word I say or you may notice your mind wandering off somewhere else and my voice fading… All is a perfectly normal sign of being in a trance state.
When in hypnosis, the conscious mind (that busy, critical part of the mind) takes a rest, so you can tap into your inner wisdom and subconscious resources.
Hypnotherapy utilises suggestions and metaphors – I offer possibilities and you turn them into what’s useful for you. I cannot force imprint anything into your mind. I am more like a navigator but
The purpose of the session is to find out the real problem, ie you may come to treat excess alcohol consumption, while during initial interview it may become obvious that this is your coping mechanism to ie anxiety, so we will go after anxiety first (which usually automatically deals with alcohol problem too).
I will also go through your intake form, your medical history, talk about your lifestyle etc… I will ask questions to establish what is missing between where you are and where you want to be. Then, I will suggest a treatment plan aka how we bridge that gap. The therapy I deliver, doesn’t just temporarily take you to where you want to be, I help you build a solid and lasting bridge so you can effectively manage challenges beyond therapy’s conclusion.
Already during the first session I will deliver psychotherapy and conduct hypnosis, so you can start DOING better from day 1. What’s more, your Hypnosis will be recorded for you, as you will need to listen to it in between sessions.
There is not much preparation needed really. It would be best if you didn’t drink coffee or energy drink for few hours before the session, or anything that could challenge your ability ty relax.
You also need to come sober and free from any other cognition altering substances.
If we have an online session, make sure you will not be disturbed by other family members or pets. You don’t need to have a complete silence but no one should be entering the room, calling you etc…
Versatility of Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy makes it applicable to a broad range of psychological issues.
An increasing body of empirical evidence shows that when the therapy is supplemented with hypnosis, its outcome is amplified. Its efficacy transcends traditional diagnostic boundaries, offering a comprehensive treatment option for a wide array of conditions.
Examples of where combination of strategic psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy will produce positive and lasting results include: Addictions, Alcoholism, Anger, Anxieties, Burnout, Confidence, Depression, Exam Nerves, Exam Performance, Gambling, Grief, Guilt, Habit Control, IBS, Letting Go, Nail Biting, Obsessive / Compulsive Behaviours OCD, Panic Attacks, Personal Growth, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD, Procrastination, Public Speaking, Relationships, Relaxation, Releasing the Past, Smoking Cessation, Stop Vaping, Stress Relief, Trauma….
Traditional lengthy talk or insight therapies certainly can have their place. However, most people want CHANGE NOW. You don’t want to invest months of your life analysing your unchangeable past and current problems repetitively.
With Strategic Psychotherapy, I won’t be delving into your past and seek “reasons” why you do what you do (ie tough childhood),
I focus on the map of the world you have unconsciously developed throughout your life – your thinking patterns that create and sustain the problem.
Consciously, you know that what you are doing (ie anxiety drinking, smoking, PTSD….) is not helpful, but you cannot seem to stop it.
I uncover the underlying pillars to the problem and strategically go after them. These are very effective, solution oriented sessions aimed to equip you with new skills and thinking patterns so you can enjoy lasting change. The use of hypnosis accelerates the therapeutic outcomes, as I can reach your unconscious mind, where the problem actually resides.
Hypnotherapy in Australia is a self-regulated industry and hypnotherapists are not yet, by law, required to meet any specific standard of training. Because of this, there are many poorly trained and unqualified hypnotists that gained their certificate after 3 day course and will claim they can provide hypnotherapy.
No wonder people find it difficult to know how to choose a hypnotherapist from the many advertising in their area. Always choose a therapist that is qualified to treat your mental issue without hypnosis in a first place (psychotherapist, psychologist…) otherwise the hypnosis session may not be that effective. It can surely be pleasant and relaxing and make you temporarily feel better but won’t give you new skills and thus will not produce long lasting effects.
Remember, hypnosis is just a tool, what one delivers through it makes a difference.
It is the responsibility of professional associations such as the Hypnotherapy Council of Australia, as the profession’s peak body, to set industry standards. These standards include minimum training, a strict code of ethics, professional supervision and continuing professional development.
Hypnotherapists who are not members of professional associations may not have adequate and recognised training. Key hypnotherapy body in Australia is https://hypnotherapycouncilofaustralia.com where you can find an accredited hypnotherapist.
The number of sessions varies based on individual needs. Generally, it is recommended to have between 4-6 sessions in total. Your treatment plan will be determined during first session and re-evaluated in each subsequent session.
The aim is for you to DO better in life, not just to FEEL better. You will already DO better after the first session and if you follow my instructions between each session, you will be surprised what you can achieve in a short time.
Clinical hypnotherapy is not covered by Medicare yet. Several private health funds provide refunds for a portion of your costs, depending on your coverage level. Please check with your private health insurance provider if you are covered.

If you are still on the fence, factor in how the cost of therapy outweighs the cost of maintaining the problem. How much do opportunities missed due to anxiety cost, how much do you pay for cigarettes, alcohol, retail “therapy” or other costly compensatory behaviours… not to mention mental health cost, relationship costs etc… Then the value of effective therapy becomes evident.
