Why a Combination of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Strategic Psychotherapy is More Powerful for Treating Anxiety
There are many therapeutic methods that aim to help you manage anxiety when it hits, but let’s be honest—imagining a calming blue ocean or an enchanted forest might give you temporary relief, but it doesn’t address the root cause. These techniques won’t teach you the skills you need to live free from anxiety. And being told to “think positively” or that “everything will be okay” only gets you so far. Even traditional talk therapy, while helpful in understanding why you feel anxious, doesn’t necessarily teach you how to stop anxiety from controlling your life. Until you learn a new way of navigating the world, no amount of relaxation exercises will truly solve the problem.
A Proven Solution for Anxiety
My approach is different. I use a highly effective blend of Strategic Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and Multichannel Eye Movement Integration to tackle anxiety at its core.
Strategic Psychotherapy is a brief, solution-focused therapy that zeroes in on how you experience anxiety, not why. I won’t be digging into your past or searching for reasons like a difficult childhood. Instead, we’ll focus on uncovering and dismantling the unconscious patterns you’ve developed that keep anxiety in place.
By integrating Clinical Hypnotherapy, we can fast-track the process, restructuring the thought patterns and behaviours that are no longer serving you.
Where useful, I may also use Multichannel Eye Movement Integration to desensitise any past experiences that fuel your anxiety today (trauma, stressful events…). All, to enable you to experience a long-lasting change.

Strategic psychotherapy is a focused and effective approach designed to deliver results in a shorter timeframe. Instead of digging into the past to uncover the reasons for your behaviors, I concentrate on how your unconscious patterns have developed and continue to influence your life.
Integrating hypnotherapy into our sessions accelerates this process, allowing us to quickly identify and reshape the thought patterns and behaviors that hold you back. The relaxed state achieved through hypnosis enhances your openness to change, helping you find relief more rapidly.
This method is ideal for those looking for fast results or feeling limited by traditional therapy. Together, we’ll forge a clear path toward meaningful and lasting change.
While many hypnosis practices rely on guided visualizations—like imagining a serene ocean or a magical forest—to induce relaxation, these approaches often provide only temporary relief. They don’t tackle the underlying issues or equip you with the skills needed for lasting change. Similarly, generic scripts used in one-size-fits-all hypnosis fail to consider your unique circumstances.
In contrast, Strategic Hypnotherapy offers a tailored experience that directly targets the root causes of your challenges. By focusing on the core pillars that sustain your issues, each session is personalized to your specific needs, making it a more effective solution for lasting transformation. Discover how this innovative approach can help you achieve meaningful change today.
Traditional or authoritarian hypnosis often relies on scripted commands, directing you to perform specific actions. This approach may also include theatrical elements like hand levitation, which can create unnecessary resistance.
In contrast, I practice a modern neo-Ericksonian style of hypnosis that encourages exploration rather than compliance. I present you with possibilities, allowing you to choose what resonates with you. This approach eliminates resistance and any worries about whether you can be hypnotized.
Everyone has the capacity to experience hypnosis; the depth of your trance may vary, but effective therapy doesn’t hinge on achieving a specific trance level.
However, it’s important to note that I will not conduct a session if you are under the influence of substances that alter your perception, such as alcohol or drugs.
Hypnosis somewhat is like a guided meditation, however with a purpose beyond relaxation and inner peace. Hypnosis induces a distinct brainwave pattern that is neither akin to normal waking, sleeping, or meditation. Instead, it shares similarities with the alpha state, characterised by physical and mental relaxation combined with mental clarity and heightened awareness of one’s surroundings.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a scientifically understood process and a very effective one in addressing a range of mental and emotional issues. It helps reprogramme your cognitive patterns so you can regain control of your mental and emotional state.
Hypnosis is completely safe and is actually a natural state of mind that you’ve likely experienced before. For instance, when you’re driving and can’t recall parts of the journey, engrossed in a movie, or right before falling asleep, you’re in a similar state.
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis, such as it being a form of mind control or that you must enter a deep trance from which you can’t wake up. None of this is true. You remain fully conscious and aware of everything I’m saying. I can’t plant thoughts in your mind against your will. You won’t fall asleep, so there’s no need to “wake up” either. However, if you start to drift off simply due to the relaxed state, I’ll gently guide you back, so you can still hear my voice.
No, not in a therapeutic setting. The misconception that a hypnotist controls your thoughts or actions comes from TV and stage shows, where participants are carefully selected for their willingness to play along and perform.
In therapy, hypnosis is a calming, guided relaxation that enhances the effectiveness of the session. You’re always in control during hypnosis—you can choose to ignore suggestions or even stop the session at any time.
The purpose of clinical hypnotherapy is to help you, not control you. When you choose to work with me, you can feel confident knowing you’re in capable and professional hands.
Each person experiences hypnosis differently, and there’s no correct or incorrect way to go through it. Often described as a “trance-like state,” hypnosis typically brings about deep mental, physical, and emotional relaxation—something that in itself can be quite therapeutic. As Dr. Milton Erickson, a leading figure in hypnotherapy, said, clinical hypnosis is “a free period in which individuality can flourish.”
During a session, you may feel deeply relaxed yet fully aware, as if you’re daydreaming but not actually asleep. You might experience a sense of heaviness or find your mind drifting off while my voice fades in the background. Both responses are normal and part of the trance experience.
In this relaxed state, the conscious, critical part of your mind takes a backseat, letting you tap into your subconscious and inner resources.
Hypnotherapy uses suggestions and metaphors, offering possibilities for you to embrace as they suit your needs. I won’t impose any thoughts; instead, I act as a guide, helping you explore your own mental landscape.
The goal of our session is to identify the root cause of your issue. For example, you might seek help for excessive alcohol consumption, but during our initial conversation, we may uncover that the real issue is anxiety, and drinking is simply a way to cope. In this case, we would target the anxiety first, which often resolves the alcohol problem as well.
I’ll also review your intake form, medical history, and lifestyle. We’ll discuss what’s currently standing between where you are now and where you want to be. From there, I’ll create a personalized treatment plan to help bridge that gap. My approach doesn’t just offer temporary relief; I focus on building a strong, sustainable foundation for lasting change, empowering you to handle challenges even after therapy ends.
During our very first session, I’ll integrate psychotherapy and hypnosis to get you started on improving right away. Your hypnosis session will be recorded, so you can listen to it between appointments, reinforcing the work we do together.
There’s little preparation required before your session. However, it’s best to avoid coffee, energy drinks, or anything that might affect your ability to relax for a few hours beforehand.
Make sure you’re sober and free from any substances that could alter your cognitive state.
For online sessions, ensure a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted by family members or pets. Complete silence isn’t necessary, but it’s important that no one enters the room or calls you during the session.
The combination of Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy offers a versatile approach that effectively addresses a wide range of psychological challenges.
Research increasingly shows that integrating hypnosis into therapy enhances outcomes, providing a powerful treatment that surpasses traditional methods. This approach is comprehensive and adaptable to various mental and emotional conditions.
Areas where this combination proves effective and long-lasting include: addictions, alcohol dependence, anger management, anxiety, burnout, confidence building, depression, exam nerves, exam performance, gambling issues, grief, guilt, habit control, IBS, letting go, nail-biting, OCD, panic attacks, personal growth, phobias, PTSD, procrastination, public speaking, relationship issues, relaxation, releasing the past, smoking cessation, quitting vaping, stress management, and trauma recovery.
Traditional, long-term talk therapies certainly have their place. However, most people are looking for immediate change. You don’t want to spend months rehashing your past or repeatedly analyzing problems that feel unchangeable.
With Strategic Psychotherapy, we won’t dig into your history to find “reasons” for your behavior (e.g., a difficult childhood).
Instead, I focus on the mental framework you’ve unconsciously built over time—the thought patterns that keep the issue alive.
You’re aware that habits like anxiety drinking, smoking, or PTSD responses aren’t helping, but breaking free feels impossible.
My approach identifies the core drivers behind your behavior and targets them directly. These solution-focused sessions are designed to give you practical skills and new ways of thinking, so you can create lasting change. Hypnosis amplifies this process, reaching the unconscious mind, where the root of the problem resides, for faster, more effective results.
Hypnotherapy in Australia is a self-regulated field, meaning there are currently no legal requirements for hypnotherapists to adhere to specific training standards. This has led to a rise in poorly trained and unqualified practitioners who may have completed just a short three-day course and claim to offer hypnotherapy services.
As a result, many people find it challenging to select a qualified hypnotherapist from the numerous advertisements in their area. It’s essential to choose a therapist who is credentialed to address your mental health issues without relying solely on hypnosis (such as a psychotherapist or psychologist). Otherwise, the hypnosis session might only provide temporary relief and not equip you with lasting skills for change.
Keep in mind that hypnosis is simply a tool; the effectiveness of the therapy depends on how it is applied.
Professional organizations like the Hypnotherapy Council of Australia play a crucial role in establishing industry standards, which include minimum training requirements, a strict code of ethics, professional supervision, and ongoing education.
Hypnotherapists who are not affiliated with recognized professional associations may lack adequate training. To find an accredited hypnotherapist, visit the Hypnotherapy Council of Australia at hypnotherapycouncilofaustralia.com.
The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your unique requirements. Typically, we recommend a total of 4 to 6 sessions. Your personalized treatment plan will be established during the initial session and assessed at each follow-up.
Our goal is to help you TAKE ACTION and improve your life, not just to feel better emotionally. You’ll likely notice positive changes after the very first session, and by following my guidance between sessions, you may be amazed at the progress you can make in a short period.
Currently, Medicare does not cover clinical hypnotherapy. However, some private health insurance plans may offer partial refunds for your sessions, depending on your coverage. It’s best to consult your insurance provider to see if you’re eligible for reimbursement.

If you are still on the fence, factor in how the cost of therapy outweighs the cost of maintaining the problem. How much do opportunities missed due to anxiety cost, how much do you pay for cigarettes, alcohol, retail “therapy” or other costly compensatory behaviours… not to mention mental health cost, relationship costs etc… Then the value of effective therapy becomes evident.
